About
Jennifer Adler, graphic designer and founder of Survival By Design, created these greeting cards so that all of her smart-mouthed, wickedly funny friends could see their thoughts reflected as art.
“It was important for me that the characters be diverse, sassy and very honest,” she says. “And definitely funny.”
The Characters
Why do the characters have no eyes or nose? Says Adler, “I have been doodling the same eyeless, nose-less character since I was small, so the stick figure seemed natural.” Despite the characters’ lack of facial features, the aim of the cards is to present people of all backgrounds in non-stereotypical situations. Most of the characters are based on Adler’s friends: “My friends are Black, White, Jewish, Vietnamese, Mexican, Gay – we make each other laugh and our friendships aren’t color-sensitive. They’ve graciously allowed me to use their personalities and lives as inspiration,” says Adler. She herself appears on a few of the cards. “A person’s eyes and nose are the most telling of a culture so my Jewish cards are hard to identify without reading them first,” she laughs. “But in case anyone’s wondering, I’m the ‘pretty Jewish girl’ with the unfortunate profile.”
The Designer
Jennifer created Survival By Design in 2006 after earning a certificate in Advertising and Print Design from Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). Currently, she manages her growing graphic design business and the Survival By Design greeting card line. Jennifer gained her existential perspective while earning a BA in Philosophy from Brandeis University and continues to evolve her artwork through RISD’s Continuing Education (CE) program. In her spare time (what little there is of it!) Jennifer enjoys swing dancing, yoga, spending time with family and friends, and traveling with her boyfriend, Seth. She is based in Providence, Rhode Island.
